Taking The Leap

Remember standing on the edge of a diving board as a child wanting to jump but being afraid?  The first time we walked up to that edge fear griped us and held us back but once we found the courage to take the leap it ushered in a summer of fun and we never looked back.  Never again were we afraid of making that jump.  We actually wondered why we were so scared in the first place.

My daughter London spent most of last summer scared to jump off the diving board but once she worked up the courage to do it we could not keep her off it.  Life is the same way.  Many times we let fear hold us back from taking the leap to something better.  We can't let fear hold us back.  We need to exercise conquering our fears daily.  This is a critical life skill and it is even more important to be successful in this new economy.  If you are afraid to take the leap you might miss your greatest opportunity.  To read my full article on this topic go to www.RobertDickie.com

Shoot for the Stars!

My father always instructed me growing up to shoot for the stars.  He said "Son, you aren't guaranteed to hit your goals but you will be better off if you aim high and give it your best shot!"  I have tried to follow those words each day.

"Enjoy the journey, love the process, shoot for the stars, and live with no regrets."

A positive outlook matters!

As I woke up in Durban South Africa overlooking the Indian Ocean and enjoying a few quiet moments before the day started I listened to the waves crash below and watched the sun slowly rise and I remembered a quote from a mentor of mine years before..."Always make your future bigger than your past."  It is the first law in the the book "Laws of Lifetime Growth."

There is something special about a sunrise, a new day, the excitement and energy working towards your goals, serving others, and helping make the world a better place.

In recent days I have spoken with a number of people who are going through some struggles whether due to the economy or in their personal life.  Those who are having the worse time have an attitude that their best days are behind them and their future is dire, uncertain, and will be less rewarding.

It is very difficult to win and have success with this mindset.  Those people who I see overcoming big obstacles in their lives and achieving success have one thing in common...they all have a contagious enthusiasm and positive attitude that their best days are in front of them and great things are in store. When you believe it....it comes true.

Focus on the positive.  Live an empowered life.  Take massive action every day to achieve your goals. Always look for ways to help and serve others while you are on the journey.  Shed negative thoughts, people, and situations.  If you do this daily great things are in store for you!

How will globalization impact you?

Here are some alarming statistics from the World Economic Forum.  These numbers tell a story and they will impact your local economy no matter where you are living.

- 40% of the world's youth (under age 25) are unemployed.
- 357 million youth are not in education, training, or employed.
- 536 million youth are under employed in the developing countries compared to 1.5 million in the EU.
- 25.6% of the youth in developing countries are forced into part-time work.
- 23.8% of the youth in the EU are unemployed
- Over 600 million jobs need to be created over the next ten years to supply global populations.

Although we are seeing the signs of a modest recovery some economist's are reporting this is masking many serious issues.  Nationalism is on the rise in Europe, China's economy is starting to slow, and true job creation to meet global demand has been non-existent.  This has been a "jobless recovery" and many are calling this the new normal.  We are entering a new economy where unemployment rates will be higher than normal and part-time work will be the norm.

Globalization is impacting every local economy.  Job markets continue to be volatile and outsourcing will remain a constant in our lifetime and I believe with increasing velocity.   As the GINI index for countries continue rise, economists are warning that globalization with all its benefits has a massive downside and that is for those who are unprepared.  The undereducated and unskilled are watching the world develop past them and many times the fall back jobs they could rely on in the past are being outsourced overseas.  One Harvard Economist said, "Globalization increases the rate of return on education" and further explained we have a world-wide education problem as the economy is developing faster than we can develop our human capital.

I am covering this topic in greater detail at www.RobertDickie.com and offering tips to develop a success plan for this new reality we all face.  Join in the conversation.
